MERDEKA INDONESIAKU! 70 years of Independence
Friday 17th of August 2015 marks Indonesia’s 70th year of Independence. Celebrations took place throughout the country with the main commemoration at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, which was led by Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. The flag ceremony was also attended by the cabinet, diplomats, and honored guests.
Business companies, groups and communities, local neighborhood associations (knows as ‘Banjar’ in Bali) may organize events during Independence day to get together and grow the spirit of togetherness. The sequence of events begin from a flag ceremony, cleaning up the local area, and ends with a full day of fun folk games. These games include cracker eating contest, pole climbing - panjat pinang, sack race, tug of war and many other.
The celebration of Independence Day ends with a flag lowering ceremony, led again by President Joko Widodo, 5pm at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
